CPE's for Triple Play

Digital Residential Gateway

PacketFront's CPE (Customer Premises Equipment) comprises end user equipment for triple-play services. It consists of the Digital Residential Gateways (DRG) series which is offered in several designs and with different functionality to fulfil the various end user and network operator needs.

All PacketFront DRGs are controlled and provisioned from the central part of PacketFront's broadband network, i.e. from BECS via the ASR series. However, in networks where the DRGs are used without BECS or ASRs, PacketFront’s Home Device Director (HDD) can be managing the DRGs.

DRG 500

The DRG 500 series, is PacketFront's series of customer premises equipment including several products optimized for triple-play services.

The DRG 500 series is purpose built to fit a home LAN environment, either Fibre To The Home or Ethernet To The Home. Embedded VoIP functionality allows the use of existing analogue telephones or fax machines. Enhanced multicast handling with support for multiple set-top boxes and thus allowing multiple TV-sets in one household, are other examples of features within the series.

A Fibre Termination Unit (FTU) can easily be clicked on to any product within the DRG 500 series, protecting fibre and connectors from damage in the household and eliminating the need for patch cables. Furthermore, a cable TV converter which converts the CATV signal in the fibre to a standard TV antenna outlet, can be integrated with the FTU. This allows for a smooth migration to an all-IP infrastructure.

With the DRG 500 and FTU , installation engineers, property owners and network owners are given greater flexibility when it comes to the installation process of active and passive access equipment.

The DRG 500 series is part of PacketFront's automated broadband solution, and is monitored by the network control and provisioning system, BECS™ , via the broadband routers, ASRs, enabling efficient and fast troubleshooting.

DRG 500 can also be managed from PacketFront's DRG element manager Home Device Director, HDD.

DRG Ease

World-first modular concept
DRG 600 (Digital Residential Gateway) is PacketFront world-leading modular Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) for delivery of multi-play services in FTTx networks.
It is based on a “sandwich” principle that builds upon the Base module for passive fiber/TP cable termination. Active modules are then easily snapped on for control and delivery of services.

The modular concept of DRG 600 allows network owners and service providers to effectively deploy broadband networks and offer services with limited initial investments. At the same time the versatility of DRG 600 enables greater earning potential with options for lifting end users to higher-value service packages over time.

Build out with easy-to-add Service Extension Modules
One of the principal benefits offered by the modularity of DRG 600 is the many opportunities it creates for marketing services in new and innovative ways. Campaigns allowing people to test services can easily be mailed-out containing service modules such as Switch, Telephony or WiFi. Or, once a network is deployed with the Base module, it can be tested by a group of users receiving the Access module in the mail. In short, the small and easy-to-install modules of DRG 600 allow great flexibility in promoting service bundles and attractive packages.

Flexible management alternatives
The ability to manage individual DRG 600 modules allows separate ownership of each module. Individual modules get their own IP address, software is provisioned independently per module and so is configuration. Hence, different parties can be responsible and own separate modules. For example, the network owner is in charge of the Base module, the local ISP owns the Access module, and two different service providers can handle Telephony and WiFi. Each module allows individual troubleshooting, a capability that makes problem solving easier and much faster. Needless to say, customers get more uptime, which increases satisfaction.

The CATV functionality is fully manageable and can be remotely turned on or off for end users subscribing to CATV services. Furthermore, a filter to block or allow premium channels is remotely managed.
